Mage Talent Builds

Up-To-Date World of Warcraft Cataclysm Mage Builds and Talent Specs for Arcane, Frost, and Fire

Arcane Leveling Build

(20/0/0)
For an Arcane Mage looking to level it is best to avoid these talents:

Improved Counterspell: Long Cooldown on Counterspell as well as not being able to use on many mobs makes this counterproductive for leveling.
Invocation: You won’t be interrupting many skills, points better spent elsewhere.
Torment the Weak: Until you can get Nether Vortex where nearly every one of your targets is slowed, this talent doesn’t hold much of a purpose.

Other than that go ahead and pick up all the other talents as shown. This is a good start until you reach level 50 where things begin to change because you can pick up Nether Vortex (and then grab Torment the Weak)

Arcane PvP Build

(32/0/0)
For an Arcane Mage looking to PvP it is best to avoid these talents:

Improved Arcane Explosion: Rarely do Mages use Arcane Explosion as an effective skill during PvP.

This is a good base Arcane PvP build with 9 points to spend so that you can tweak it based on your PvP style. Stat Priorities are shown below:
  1. Intellect (gives you spellpower, mana, some crit)
  2. Mastery
  3. Critical Strike Rating
  4. Haste Rating

(33/5/3)

Invocation: You won’t be interrupting many skills, points better spent elsewhere.
Improved Arcane Explosion: Rarely do Mages uses Arcane Explosion in raiding.
Incanter’s Absorption: Points are better spent having less push-back so these points were put into Burning Soul.

Other than that go ahead and pick up all the other talents as shown. This is a good base Arcane Raiding build, you may tweak it based on your raiding style. Stat Priorities are shown below:
  1. Intellect (gives you spellpower, mana, some crit)

Fire Leveling Build

(0/20/0)
For a Fire Mage looking to level, it is more about what time to pick up certain talents and not what talents should I be getting because most can be useful. It comes down to playing style and if you’re going to level by questing and on your own or by dungeons.

Fire PvP Build

(0/38/3)
For a Fire Mage looking to PvP it is best to avoid these talents:

Pyromaniac:
I feel like having 3% more Crit is more important and as a result, this is the only talent left out of fire that isn’t useful for PvP.

Other than that go ahead and pick up all the other talents as shown. This is a good Fire PvP build, you may tweak it based on your raiding style. Stat Priorities are shown below:
  1. Intellect (gives you spellpower, mana, some crit)
  2. Critical Strike Rating
  3. Mastery or Haste Rating

Fire Raiding Build

(3/35/3)
For a Fire Mage looking to raid it is best to avoid these talents:

Improved Fire Blast: We like Fire Blast because it spreads our DoTs not because we like the damage the spell does.
Blazing Speed: 10% of the spells you do will increase your speed! Too bad being faster doesn’t equate to doing more DPS, avoid this talent.
Molten Shields: Be honest, when do you use Mage Ward? This talent reduces the cooldown by 1 second. Yippee!

Other than that go ahead and pick up all the other talents as shown. This is a good Fire Raiding build, you may tweak it based on your raiding style. Stat Priorities are shown below:
Intellect (gives you spellpower, mana, some crit)

Frost Leveling Build

(0/0/24)
For a Frost Mage looking to level it is best to avoid these talents:

Piercing Chill: Talent points are better spent on other thing.
Ice Shards: While Blizzard is nice, this talent is not useful because when using Blizzard you won’t be alone, and you won’t need a slow effect on your targets.
Permafrost: Not that this talent can’t be used, but it isn’t needed and when leveling, it is best to go for Ice Barrier as soon as you can.

Other than that go ahead and pick up all the other talents as shown. This is a good Frost Leveling build, you should tweak it based on your raiding style.

Frost PvP Build

(2/3/36)
For a Frost Mage looking to PvP it is best to avoid these talents:

Ice Shards: Blizzard isn’t used often in PvP
Enduring Winter: Isn’t fantastic, and Burning Soul is better

Other than that go ahead and pick up all the other talents as shown. This is a good Frost PvP build, you should tweak it based on your raiding style. Stat Priorities are shown below:
  1. Intellect (gives you spellpower, mana, some crit)
  2. Critical Strike Rating
  3. Mastery or Haste Rating

Frost Raiding Build

(0/8/33)
For a Frost Mage looking to raid it is best to avoid these talents:

Cone of Cold: Mages never use Cone of Cold in raiding.
Shattered Barrier: Not a talent that is useful raiding.
Netherwind Presence: You’ll see a lot of builds include the haste talent, most Frost mages including myself reforge Haste into Crit. I find Ice Shards more useful especially on bosses such as Magmaw.

Other than that go ahead and pick up all the other talents as shown. This is a good Frost Raiding build, you may tweak it based on your raiding style. Stat Priorities are shown below:
  1. Intellect (gives you spellpower, mana, some crit)
  2. Hit Rating (until cap, which is 17% or 1742 hit rating)
  3. Critical Strike Rating
  4. Mastery or Haste Rating
